Independence Football Festival

ENGLISH First Division soccer team, Arsenal will arrive in the island in two parties over the weekend for the Independence Soccer Festival next week because no insurance company will undertake to insure the entire team on the same plane.

The first party will arrive 1.30 p.m. Saturday and the second will arrive on Sunday. Trinidad who along with Jamaica and Arsenal make up the three teams in the series will arrive on Monday afternoon.

Trinidad meet Arsenal in the feature of the opening double header of the tournament on Tuesday night. The first game of the night starts at 7.00 when Kingston College the defending Manning Cup champions meet Cornwall. The big match of the night starts at 8.30.

On Wednesday, Arsenal play a Sugar Manufacturers Association team at Monymusk. In preparation for this game the SMA have arranged two practice games. The first will be played this afternoon against Vere Technical at Monymusk at 4.15. The final workout will be on Saturday when the SMA team which is to be announced today will meet Cavaliers at Monymusk at 4.15 p.m.

The second game in the series on Thursday, August 5 will be the long awaited clash between Jamaica and Trinidad. The opening game of the double header that night will be between Kingston Technical and Vere Technical.

The final game will be played Saturday, August 7 between Jamaica and Arsenal who are favourites to top the Independence series which is being sponsored by Frank Watson and promoted by the Jaycees and Lig-Mona clubs.
