MLS approaches sellout for opener with Clash, United

Major League Soccer is hoping for a sellout crowd of 28,000 for its season opener April 6 in San Jose, Calif., between the hometown Clash and (Washington) D.C. United.

Ticket sales through Monday were approaching 24,000 at Spartan Stadium.

MLS officials said more than 200 media are expected for the game (8 ET, ESPN).

Teams have cut their rosters to 22 players, exclusive of Olympic team candidates, who will not count.

April 15 is the deadline for 18-player limits, including four internationals.
