New York and Los Angeles gained ground in the National Professional Soccer League today.

The Generals beat Philadelphia 4-1 and Los Angeles edged Atlanta 2-1 last night. In United Soccer Association action, Detroit and Cleveland played to a 1-1 tie as did Vancouver and Washington.

Penalty kicks accounted for both goals in the Detroit-Chicago tie at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Francesco Rizzo scored the one for Chicago. Art Stewart tallied the one for Detroit. An apparent goal by Detroit's Tommy Morrow early in the second half was disallowed because of an offside.

Washington took a 1-0 lead on Francis Munro's goal from nine yards out after 12 minutes of play. Vancouver tied it on Alan Cauden's boot early in the second half of the game at Washington.

New York handed the Philadelphia Spartans their fifth straight defeat in the NPSL. The Spartans scored first on Orlando Guerro's goal, but New York tied it on a boot by Warren Archibald and went ahead for good on Hester Manfredi's 25-yard shot. Phillipe Vorbe and Archibald again got the Generals' later goals.

Cirilo Fernandez and Ron Crisp gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead in the first half, and Atlanta scored on Brian Bedford's kick with two seconds left in the half.
