ANNAPOLIS (AP) — Howard University defeated Navy 2-0 Tuesday and won the Eastern Regional championship in the NCAA soccer tournament.
The victory moved Howard in to the national quarterfinals against Philadelphia Textile, a 2-1 victor Tuesday in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware finals.
The winner of the Howard-Philadelphia Textile game which probably will be played Saturday,
will advance to the four-team semifinals the following week in Edwardsville, Ill.
Keith Aqui scored Howard's first goal in the opening period, and Don Simmons got another in the third quarter when his corner kick was blown into the net by a strong wind.
Both teams had 14 shots at the goal, with Nels Goddard recording six saves in the Middies' net and Mike Jones four for Howard.
